Pto Villamil, Southern Isabela Island

This small town started long ago as a fishing village. Nowadays, the conservationist attitude among the people that live here is very noticeable. This town has a branch of one of the most important research centers in the world, the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS).

Most of the population is directly involved with conservation and protection of the animals found in the Galápagos Islands. Even the kids are directly involved through different programs that the CDRS and the National Park Service (NPS) had created long ago. One of them is called the Giant Tortoises Club. The club has kids of various ages act as ambassadors that travel to different inhabited islands inside the Galápagos, and in some cases, to other parts of the world. The idea is to spread the word of conservation, and to let know everyone that you are never too young or too old to start caring. It was a great treat to have several kids from this club join us for a talk and for dinner, leaving in everyone of us the sense that we really care about this enchanted place, and that there is nothing more important than the education provided to the future of the world, the children!
