Genovesa Island

Ever since Lindblad Expeditions came to the Galápagos Islands, the conservation issues had been a priority for us. Our plan was to go beyond of what a regular tour company would go, and part of the plan was to involve people that could eventually influence the thinking and the behavior of the rest of the community living in the Galápagos. The idea is to adapt our way of living and create a relation ship with the environment that would allow us to protect and preserve this paradise for future generations to come. Right now we have a group of teenagers from different schools from Galápagos, interacting and exchanging knowledge that would create a strong and well direct environmental consciousness. This group of young students has been invited to discover through their own eyes the importance of conservation. The itinerary has been carefully thought and planed, so they can visit the most remote regions in Galápagos that are not easily access in a regular cruise.

Unfortunately, the Galápagos is still inaccessible to many Ecuadorians and even worst than that, to people from Galápagos itself due to the lack of economic resources. It is very rewarding to see the enthusiasm of our guests every time they see something new, and even though they don't find the appropriate words to express their emotions, we can tell just by the look of their eyes.

Today we visited the Island of Genovesa. None of our young travelers had ever visited this place before, and of course we all had a blast when we set foot on the island. It was impressive to see the abundance of sea birds flying over our heads, many of which were foraging, but there were a big number of juveniles starting their flying lessons.

Genovesa is one of the islands where the Galápagos Hawk is not present. This is the reason why another predator had taken place on the diurnal prey-hunting habits, the short-eared owl. In the picture above, you could observe its hunting techniques over some small marine iguanas, which only happens when storm petrels (its favorite food) is not around.
