Floreana Island

Today we had the opportunity of doing everything, and sometimes twice. We had a deep water snorkeling outing both in the morning and in the afternoon; we had beautiful hikes both in the morning and afternoon; and we also enjoyed a fabulous Zodiac ride to find the elusive Floreana mockingbird of Champion islet.

Some people started their day stretching up on the sky deck, accompanied by our masseuses and surrounded by the amazing view of an Island that is a jewel in the Galápagos, Floreana. From the ship we could see the several parasitic volcanoes that shape the mystery island, and we could also see the landing site, Post Office Bay, as well as the lava rocks where we had the early morning zodiac ride. Having visited this northern shore of the island, we came back to the Islander to head towards Champion Islet for the after-breakfast activities. This is the place where we enjoyed many playful sea lions in the water, and we marveled in their company and in the company of the colorful species of fish and the amazing underwater topography. We had lunch and then learned about the crazy inhabitants that Floreana once had, like a toothless dentist and a ruthless Baroness. The afternoon found us anchored in front of Punta Cormorant, where we had a wonderful walk to see flamingos, endemic species of plants and two beaches with different kinds of sand: organic (white) and inorganic (green). Before the walk some had snorkeled around Devil’s crown, a submerged tuff cone where we saw schools of snappers and some white-tipped reef sharks. Several people chose to go to the beach to swim and relax instead of dealing with the deep waters of the crown.

In the evening we met in the lounge to watch the preview of the video chronicle of our trip in the Galápagos, and then we had dinner on the sky deck, below the stars, with sea lions swimming around. Some people still had the energy for doing some salsa dancing, as we were teaching dancing tips after dinner. It was a complete and amazing day!
