Hood Island

Our wonderful day was spent on the island of Hood located on the south eastern most corner of Galápagos. This is also the oldest island in the archipelago as it lies far away from the Galápagos hotspot.

In the morning, we enjoyed an amazing deep water snorkeling outing on turtle rock where thousands of fish were filling the water with their multiple colors. Some white tipped reef sharks were found resting at the bottom.

For those who wanted to walk and have a little swim, the beach of Gardner bay was just perfect. This week we notice more new born Galápagos sea lions resting close to their mothers and many were also practicing their skills in the surf very close to the shore. As we walked along the shore, we encountered some curious Hood mocking birds that were feeding on some seeds and insects found around the bushes.

We left Gardner bay and headed towards the western corner of Hood Island. We took the long and also the short walk that took us through the breeding grounds of Nazca boobies, swallow tailed gulls, and also the nesting area of the largest sea bird in Galápagos, the Galápagos waved albatross. We found several couples in their courting ritual as well as some juveniles still with a little bit of dawn covering their heads.

We returned aboard and shared some thoughts about our most amazing trip.
