Floreana Island

Our expedition continued early in the morning today with a very interesting visit to the historically famous Post Office Bay. This site is a very important one within the human history of the Galápagos Islands. Many people have visited this place throughout the years. In the very beginning, whalers left letters and messages in the barrel with the hope that a vessel passing by would forward them to their destinations. Nowadays, we keep this fascinating tradition as visitors to the Galápagos still leave their postcards with similar hopes to those of the pioneers of this peculiar mailing system. After this visit, we went for a Zodiac ride along a small group of nearby islets where we observed many sea lions among many other great wildlife sightings. One sighting was particularly specia,l because we had the occasion to see a couple of new-born sea lions. Their mothers probably delivered the babies just a few hours before we saw them. The placentas were still bloody and right next to these very small and cute puppies.

Later in the morning, we left anchor and moved on to our second destination in the morning: Champion Islet. This islet is a very small volcanic tuff cone around which the underwater life is just unbelievable. Many of our enthusiastic guests went snorkelling. The water was clear and allowed us to enjoy a fantastic number of colourful tropical fish. Some of our guests mentioned that they felt like they had been swimming inside an aquarium, but it was the real world! We are very lucky and privileged to have these wonderful places still in pristine conditions.

After lunch, we went to Punta Cormorant. This picturesque visitor site is home to the always-admired flamingos. These beautiful birds were a true highlight; their vibrant colouration contrasted the dark surroundings in a magical way. Some juveniles, like the one in the picture, were seen very close without showing any fear. Reluctantly, we came back on board just waiting for tomorrow’s expedition and the surprises that will be in store for us.
