Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns & Sail Along the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness to Fort Augustus

Brilliant sunshine and showers alternated throughout this great day. We took the coach to Culloden Battlefield to hear about, see and almost feel the troubles of the Jacobites and the victory of the government troops. This is where Prince Charles Edward Stuart and his army were beaten by the government army. This meant the end to their cause and therefore no more hope for a Stuart king.

After Culloden we went even further into history to the Clava Cairns. Thousands of years ago sophisticated people built these monuments to honor their ancestors and celebrate the life giving sun. Brilliant sunshine illuminated this wonderful site for us.

Once back at the ship we sailed along the Caledonian Canal, a masterpiece of engineering, built from 1803 until 1822. We also, as part of the canal, crossed Loch Ness, where Carol gave a talk on ‘Ossian and the romantic movement in Scotland’. In the late afternoon we reached the pretty village of Fort Augustus which, for some of us, meant an evening stroll – maybe even to one of the local pubs. And, of course, another gorgeous evening meal!
