Laggan to Banavie with Glencoe

The day starts with a slight chill, which the sun very quickly burnt off. And it’s another scorching day! Even the clouds lift off Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain (4406 ft/ 1344m) to reveal the top for a while, a rare occurrence.

After our crossing of Loch Lochy, we enter another man-made section of the Caledonian Canal, at Gairlochy. Those in need of some exercise disembark to either walk a couple of hours or cycle along the tow path to Banavie. We all share the same stunning views: of Ben Nevis, the river Lochy on port side and lots of sheep and cattle along the way – what a treat!

Once berthed at Banavie there is time for everyone to explore the area, including Neptune’s staircase (series of 8 locks) just ahead of us. After lunch our excursions take us to the Ben Nevis Distillery, where we learn about the way that whisky is made and also get a ‘wee dram’. Some of us explore Glen Nevis after this, whilst most of us head to Glencoe, a historic and beautiful valley. The visitor centre deals with all the aspects of Glencoe, including the wildlife and human population in an innovative way.

Once back at the ship we have dinner and enjoy the rays of the setting sun shining onto Ben Nevis.
