Sifnos Island
After a phenomenally refreshing swim at Cape Sounion last night, and our first night aboard Panorama, we awoke this morning to the sight of Serifos Island off our port bow, and a light breeze behind us. It was a beautiful first morning in the Aegean.
After breakfast, Sue led us in a fun game of “People Bingo,” Stella and Naní introduced us to the Cycladic Islands of Greece, and Mark taught us a bit about boat and water safety. Formalities concluded, it was time to hit the beach!
Panorama was anchored in Vathí Bay, on Sifnos Island, and we had a number of beaches to choose from. We opted for a small, calm, sandy beach near a picturesque whitewashed church and a local taverna. Kids and adults alike went kayaking, swam, played beach volleyball and dug sand castles. Some ventured into the lovely little Orthodox chapel to photograph the icons, while others sat in the shade at the taverna and had a cool, refreshing drink. We all had a great time, and hearing the news that Panorama’s swim platform was open, we headed back for some quick jumps from the diving platform.
In the afternoon, we explored inland on Sifnos. Grown-ups headed for the charming medieval Kastro, while our younger guests learned the art of pottery and ceramic making with Kostas, a third generation Greek potter. As the adults returned from their walking tour and afternoon “birra” or “frappe,” they found clay-covered, smiling children, proudly showing off their creations.
We all returned to Panorama, where we found friendly faces waiting with cold drinks, and a delicious dinner afterwards. An evening stroll in the port of Kamares rounded out our day, which felt full and alive with the culture and beauty of Greece.
