Lemaire Channel, Peterman Island, and points South

The great thing about Antarctica is that Christmas is always white. And that is exactly why we came - for the ice, and the wildlife that calls this place home.

It is the day before Christmas. The National Geographic Endeavour navigates the scenic Lemaire Channel, carefully, avoiding the ice that guards the shore. Mountains rise from the sea. Glaciers hang precariously above.

A landing on the granite shore at Peterman Island. Adelie and Gentoo penguins celebrate the season with their newly hatched families. A flotilla of kayaks plies the calm waters past sculpted monuments of ice. Snowflakes flutter by. A lone penguin adorns a burgee bit along the shore.

The ship pushes even farther south through a mosaic of pack ice where crab eater seals slumber. Warm drinks at tea time with icescapes out the window. Our Captain parks in the ice, all is quiet.

Spirits, conversation, and a festive dinner. More spirits, music and caroling.

We drift with the ice. Silent night.
