At Sea

The Story of the Christmas Sea Star

Long ago, in the days when wise men followed stars, a small pink sea star lived in the freezing seas at the bottom of the world. The cold did not bother her at all and she was very happy there with her friends, the urchins and feather stars. Mostly she spent her time wandering among the rocks, searching for good things to eat, but every once in a while she like to climb up on the kelp and look up into the world of air above the sea. It was an interesting place and she liked to watch the strange lives of the animals that lived up there.

In those days life was sometimes hard for the people who lived on the shores around the seas. Winters were long and dark and food could be scarce. The little sea star felt bad for the people who were sad and scared and wished that she could help them feel better.

Then, one cold night, a new star shone in the sky and wise men followed it to a new idea: that light and warmth will always return and sharing the light in their hearts would carry them safely through the darkness. It was a time of renewal and celebration and great joy. The little sea star shone too. She could see the cycles of light and dark turning and she knew that the darkest time where most of the people lived was the warmest and brightest time at the bottom of the world where she made her home.

She shone as brightly as she could, but no one noticed her, they were all busy looking up at the glory of the new star in the sky. She didn’t mind, she just kept on shining her happy pink light.

Many years passed. There were good times and bad, but the light and joy of summer were always reborn after even the hardest and darkest winters. The little pink sea star watched the world and shone brightly, year after year. Wise men continued to follow different kinds of stars and eventually they came to the seas at the bottom of the world and saw the little sea star shining there. She was very happy to be noticed after so long. Now she shines especially bright each year at the time when her world is full of summer light and the distant north is dark. Above the sea and below, all around the world, it is still a time of renewal and celebration and great joy.
