Puerto Gato

Beautiful morning, as usual! The sky burned, as did the ocean. As we made our slow way to Puerto Gato, we were distracted(!) by a series of huge marine mammals. Whales. Big ones. Soon we knew the first one was a blue whale, the biggest animal known on our planet. Imagine 80 feet of length and 160 tons! Huge! We had the luck of watching it come to the surface to blow a series of times, and then dive deep. Maybe the only animal that was longer (and only longer but not more massive) was a dinosaur called Seismosaurus. Other whales distracted our attention from this one, who very probably was a mother and calf. So we left them and proceeded to watch another whale.

Eventually we arrived to our morning destination at Puerto Gato, with an incredible view of red mountains. These are very old mineralized sand dunes, right down to the water. Here we snorkeled till everybody was satisfied, and had seen puffer fish, sergeant majors, blennies and angelfish. Quite a few invertebrates were seen on the rocks, such as urchins, anemones, worms and snails.

After lunch, we returned to the beach and, besides having fun (where all the young people played football till their faces were properly sunburnt), we swam or took part in hikes along an arroyo, to enjoy the multitude of desert plants and the lovely views of the area.

After dinner we watched the smaller children play at a piñata, where William made it difficult for them to find it, lowering it or making it go up all the way. Yes. Eventually the piñata was felled and the scramble for the candies began, and finished!
