Drake Passage

The weather is fine with about 5 kts of wind on the stern helping us along a little. Very little swell. Anders the hotel manager briefed the guests on the ships facilities and the staff were introduced to them along with the Oceanities researchers (Steve and Melissa) and the National Geographic photographer Tim Layman.

As soon as the talk was over, about 60 guests crowded the stern decks to get their first glimpses of the Wandering and Black Browed Albatrosses; Giant, White Chinned and Wilson’s Storm Petrels; and a few Prions that were following the ship. Karen gave her excellent talk on sea birds in the afternoon after a suitable break for a post lunch nap.

Captain Kruess’s cocktail party was held in the evening and the officers were introduced to the guests.

In the evening, “Shackleton’s Adventure” Imax film was shown in preparation for our possible landing at Point Wild on Elephant Island, where the 22 men waited for rescue for four months. We should be there in the afternoon tomorrow.
