Cerro Dragón & Sombrero Chino Island

Early in the morning we started the day on the northwestern side of Santa Cruz Island, the second largest island on the archipelago. Cerro Dragon was our next site. In this place we had the opportunity to see, during the walk, the Galápagos land iguanas. Some of us had the chance to ride along the coastline as the sun was rising with an impressive orange gentle light.

Blue footed boobies, pelicans, crabs and herons were decorating the shoreline; lava rock and cacti, Palo Santo trees and mangroves were observed as well. Some of us decided to have a morning stretch on the NG Endeavour’s upper open deck and few others chose to sleep a little bit longer; what a way to start the day with so many different activities.

Back on board we had our breakfast and soon after we went snorkeling around Guy Fawkes Islets. Many invertebrates, fish and much more was seen; in fact, it was an array of colors and shapes on “the wall” that dominates this snorkeling site. Right under us we experienced an abysm as if we were birds gliding on a vast plane, but underwater. Today, the water temperature was so comfortable that once they arrived to the “pick up point” our guests opted to take off their masks and continue to swim around for relaxation. It was just stunning.

Back on board we headed to our next destination, Sombrero Chino. Around this volcanic cone we had many options that maximize our marine experience: Zodiac rides, relaxing at the beach and deep water snorkeling and kayaking outings. Today we were greeted by Galápagos penguins, white tipped reef sharks, marine iguanas, and tons of fish. All these creatures were over and under a surreal underwater landscape.

We have reached the pinnacle of our expedition and we are now a big family. This is the magic touch from “the enchanted islands.” I can’t wait for our new experiences tomorrow.
