Bartolomé Island and Puerto Egas
Early in the morning we landed at Bartolomé Island for a walk to the top of the volcano to admire its beauty and the beauty of the surrounding land. One of the best things to do in the Galápagos is to visit the Island of Bartolomé. This is for several reasons, and the most important are the landscape and the scientific value of the place.
The scientific value is regarding the geological features. This island can be paradise for a geologist because of the different features of the lava, the craters and the volcanic ash.
The ecology of the place is something very important to pay attention to. This new island has very few organisms thriving such as: lava lizards, snakes and very few plants.
Here, in front of our eyes, we can see how a new ecosystem is formed with the pioneer species that eventually are going to form the organic matter for new organisms to settle, and eventually thrive, forming a more complex ecosystem.
This place was complemented with an astonishing snorkeling site. Here, we could see penguins, sharks, sea lions and myriads of tropical fish.
Late in the afternoon we anchored in a place named Puerto Egas on Santiago Island. This place has two highlights: one is the snorkeling site, and the other is a trail that will lead you the interior of the island to later on come back by the shoreline at sunset.
The walk along the shoreline is just amazing with a whole collection of organisms such as iguanas, sea lions, shore birds, sea birds and the landscape itself is mind blowing.
