Tracy Arm
What a place to wake up! The steep cliffs of Tracy Arm hugged the ship close as we made our way through the field of icebergs. All eyes were on the windows during breakfast, mesmerized by the incredibly vibrant blue face of the glacier, less than a mile away.
We headed out in the Zodiacs and were treated to the sounds and sheer power of the glacier as it calved repeatedly. Harbor seals were hauled out on the ice and some pups swam in the water in the distance. Back on the ship, a hummingbird buzzed the decks curiously.
The afternoon offered an opportunity to explore by kayak in water more than 1000 feet deep. The weather was pleasant as we admired the little waterfalls and wild flowers growing on the rock walls. The sheer size of the icebergs takes on new meaning from the perspective of the waterline and it is easy to find a sense of awe in the solitude.
Making our way out of Tracy Arm, the hanging valleys reminded us of how much we had learned about glacially sculpted topography this week. We took a few moments to get a very close look at the Hole-in-the-Wall waterfall. A guest on deck said, “I just can’t get enough. It is all so… SO!”
Words come short when describing the magnitude and beauty of this place. It has been a spectacular week from the first day to the last.
