Floreana Island
We started our expedition today by visiting Punta Cormorant before breakfast. We landed on the shore of a green beach, very different from the sandy white beach we would see later. Black-necked stilts and wimbrels wandered in the distance in a brackish lagoon, along with one greater flamingo…the first of the season. The air was warm, and the light was incredible for photos.
Seeing the Floreana mockingbird was a highlight during our zodiac ride. And after we went snorkelling everyone was ready for another chance to jump into the ocean. Deep-water snorkelling with a large number of Galápagos sea lions was fantastic!!! We weren’t sure who was more interested in the other—us or the sea lions! Many underwater photos were taken, with a lot of screaming, laughter and joy. Several white-tipped reef sharks were spotted in the area as well. It was so much fun that none of us wanted to leave the water.
The afternoon found our zodiacs heading to Post Office Bay, to the historical mail barrel. This location has been used as an unconventional mail drop since the days when pirates and whalers sailed the waters of the Galápagos Islands. We honoured the system and took some letters to be delivered by hand later.
As the day’s light faded and the last zodiac returned to the National Geographic Endeavour, we finished another magical day in paradise…
