Nordfjord, Melfjord & the Arctic Circle Crossing

Scrambles up scree slopes and blazing our own trails through the alder and birch shrubs as well as Zodiac cruises and kayaking were on offer as the many possible activities this morning. We awoke in the morning hours to find out ship moored into the beach at the head of the fjord. The sun was already high in the sky this early in the morning.

We are near the Arctic Circle. We crossed it once during the night but are south of it again in Nordfjord. Many people could be found out on the decks before breakfast enjoying the beautiful views of the deep rocky fjord we found ourselves in. Glaciers glinted from high above and waterfalls sparkled as they plummeted from lofty heights.

Quickly the hikers and photographers were dispatched to shore to begin their adventurous excursions. They were soon followed by Zodiac cruises taking in the views from the water. The warm and windless morning was perfect for some peaceful paddles in the kayaks. Those seeking a bit more solitude and quiet chose this mode of transportation to enjoy themselves on such a lovely morning. Hikers were rewarded after their long or short walks to great views of the fjord and ship from above. Those who went by water got glimpses of shy harbor seals and many oyster catchers. Some even saw several sea eagles, the largest bird to be found in Norway with a wingspan up to seven feet.

The heat and sunshine continued after we left Nordfjord and allowed those who decided to forgo a nap a pleasant afternoon sitting in the perpetual sunshine and admiring Norwegian homes, farms, and landscapes.

Finally, to end a very wonderful day, we anchored after dinner at Traena. This small group of islands is only a few miles from the Arctic Circle. To commemorate this event most went ashore and walked to a globe shaped monument there in celebration of the circle. The fog rolled in and the formerly warm temperatures cooled, but of course being in the arctic meant that the day light was still with us. We drank a cup of glög and enjoyed conversation with a few locals of Traena.

Tomorrow, the Arctic.
