Floreana Island
Seldom have we had a nice and smooth navigation from the western islands to the southernmost island, Floreana, but that was the case last night. After a comforting night’s sleep, we woke up to find a gorgeous day at Post Office Bay, on the northern shore of this old island. The reminiscence of long gone days was once more evoked when we were all checking the mail left there by previous visitors. Our mission will be to hand deliver the postcards we collected and maybe get to know new interesting people that share our enthusiasm for nature.
Not only did the day began in a nice way, but we also found terrific conditions in the ocean with water that was so clear and inviting that even before the set time we were all ready to begin our snorkeling session. It is unnecessary to mention how wonderful our experience was. We were simply transported to a different world and we boarded the Zodiacs back only when we realized that if we didn’t get out of the water soon, we would lose the feeling in our fingers and toes due to the cold water. Such was the enchantment.
In the afternoon we enjoyed the magnificence on Punta Cormorant where we found a few cooperative flamingos that were oblivious of our proximity. It was phenomenal! We saw how they eat, and their pace, not too far away from us. They were, however, not the only birds around. Several finches, yellow warblers and even a dark billed cuckoo made their presence clear to us while we walked the trail.
We finished our afternoon at the “flour beach” where a cluster of turtles were mating. Some females were trying to reach the dry land to rest for a while and we sat nearby to understand the messages that were happening all around us in nature.
It has been comforting in many ways to have visited this place. It was comforting for our minds, and for our souls too.
