Bartolome & Santiago Islands
We have been navigating around the Galápagos Islands for a week already. It is fascinating to observe how we still keep being surprised with all the new experiences that appeared on a daily basis during our expedition.
Today we woke up very early in the morning to hike to the summit of Bartolome Island. Wildlife is not very abundant on Bartolome Island mainly because of the lack of rain and the high degree of erosion that this little island supports, but the scenery we enjoyed as we were going higher and higher is amazing. After climbing up 372 steps to the top, we had a great reward, the outstanding view of the magnificent Pinnacle Rock and several islands in the horizon – simply breathtaking!
After breakfast we were ready for our water activities. We disembarked on a golden beach next to Pinnacle Rock. Snorkeling is outstanding in this place. Sea stars can be seen all over, and all kinds of tropical reef fish as well. Some of our guests had an even better surprise: they came back from the water with smiles on their faces and told us: “I swam with a penguin!”
The afternoon’s schedule included time to relax or to snorkel at a black beach on Puerto Egas, Santiago Island. After these activities we started our walk along the shoreline. Isabela Island was visible at the distance; shore birds were looking for food on the intertidal pools. Galápagos sea lions were looking to us with their characteristic curiosity.
What a way to say goodbye to the Islands! In their minds, our guests were probably thinking, “See you soon sea lions, so long boobies; we will come back to see you soon!”
