Floreana Island

Early in the morning we started our day. We disembarked on a beach and walked to a place frequently visited by whalers, buccaneers and pirates during the 1800’s, Post Office Bay. Here we found the barrel that was used to keep any type of correspondence they sent home at that time, to be taken by any other visitor who was heading in that direction. There is still mail to be delivered! We looked through the addresses of other letters and postcards to see if anyone could hand deliver or mail them to their destination. We also left some mail in turn, and crossed our fingers in hope they will make their way home. We felt like pirates.

Back on board, we had breakfast and got ready for a Zodiac ride around Champion Islet. We spotted it all, from the Floreana mockingbirds, Nazca boobies, swallowed-tailed gulls, red-billed tropic birds, common noddies, and brown pelicans to Galápagos sea lions. After this we went snorkeling in the same place. The sea was calm and the water was crystal clear. We easily encountered colorful fishes, sea stars, turtles and a white tipped reef shark!

Then we set sail to Punta Cormorant, while having lunch. Here some of our guests got to kayak in the Galápagos waters for the first time. It was a sunny afternoon and they enjoyed this amazing adventure that let them observe the animals and surroundings from another perspective.

Later that afternoon we disembarked to go hiking and explore more of Floreana. In a brackish water lagoon we saw the stunning greater flamingos at a distance. On the other side of this point of land there is a white sand beach, which now is the perfect nesting place for marine turtles that are approaching their breeding season.

As we strolled along the beach, the sun made us look for some shade behind a few rocks. We rested there for awhile, looking at and listening to the sea. What an ideal way to end the day!
