Floreana Island

This was a lovely day at Floreana Island. Starting with an early morning wake-up call, we landed at the historic Post Office Bay. Pirates, buccaneers, whalers and early settlers all landed here long ago, looking up in the highlands for fresh water to drink and giant tortoises to eat. This very bay was the starting point for many of them to try to establish their temporary early settlements.

Later in the morning we went around Champion Islet by Zodiacs. It was a nice cool morning highlighted by lots of marine birds like Nazca boobies, Swallow tailed gulls, Frigate birds, Brown noddies, Blue footed boobies and many other creatures like playful Galápagos sea lions and colorful Sally Lightfoot crabs. After the rides, many of us got ready to explore the islet in a different way. We went snorkeling and found lots tropical fish, including sharks, and sea lions.

In the afternoon, kayakers had a wonderful time along the shores of Punta Cormorant. The late afternoon found us strolling around a brackish water lagoon where we observed some Greater flamingoes. It was a great opportunity for our younger guests this week to learn about these colorful birds in the Galápagos and, later on, play with the fine white sand at the “flour beach” on Floreana Island. We even had time to tell stories about early settlers and the first man living on this island. These stories were different, amusing and extremely interesting as well.

At the end of the day, we felt that everybody had a marvelous time visiting the exquisite places that this island has to offer.
