Española Island

Today we had what I consider among the best days for experiencing the biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands.

We started at 6:15 am with eager kayakers who enjoyed the fabulous shores of Gardner Bay with sea turtles, sea lions and a lot of fish. There were clear waters and impressive lava formations. We explored for more than an hour until our Naturalist guided us back to our vessel for breakfast and the next adventure.

After breakfast we landed at the most amazing white sandy beach on the islands, Gardner Bay. Here we practiced snorkeling and the more experienced snorkelers ventured to deep water along Gardner Islet — what a fabulous morning site in the archipelago.

The afternoon’s highlight was Punta Suarez. This place has a lot of endemic creatures including the very red and very big marine iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs, big lava lizards, dives, hundreds of sea lions lots of finches, hawks, Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies dancing, striated herons, yellow crested herons and of course the king of the day, the fabulous waved albatross.

A lot of the albatross couples were sitting on their eggs while others were still enhancing the pair’s bond; by the end of June we will see all the chicks hatched.

We left the island at sunset with beautiful orange color in the horizon.
