Floreana Island

Our morning began by visiting Post Office Bay. This is a place like no other: pirates, buccaneers, and whalers disembarked on the same location. Sometime in the late 1700’s captain James Colnett wrote about a barrel, where mail could be left to be brought back to mainland, once there the person who picked up the letters had to hand deliver them. This is how it worked out then, and it is how it works today. We looked for letters and postcards and there were a few taken, so we continued with this very ancient tradition. We left this historical place and navigated towards Champion Islet, once there we went snorkeling, while others enjoyed the underwater world using our glass bottom boat. We found several sea turtles, sting rays, white-tipped reef sharks, and thousands of fish.

After such a spectacular morning we repositioned the National Geographic Polaris towards Punta Cormorant. This is one of the best places to kayak because of the calm waters and also the presence of sea turtles, blue-footed boobies and Galápagos sea lions that were our companions all along the coast of Punta Cormorant. We went ashore and visited the nesting grounds of East Pacific green sea turtles; some mating couples were observed from the coast. We also had the company of a juvenile flamingo, we felt completely ignored by this young creature, while from a distance we could hear and see some adults. As the sun started to set we were surprised by all the noises of Whimbrels and black necked common stilts that were arriving to spend the night on some rocks. We left Floreana and had a great time talking about the different things we had seen and enjoyed today.
