San Josecito Beach & Corcovado National Park, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Last night we saw the greater fishing bats fishing off the stern of the ship. They flew close to the water, catching the fish that swam close to the surface.

At sunrise we weighed anchor off Drake Bay and started to reposition to San Josecito. Our morning activities started out happily delayed due to the humpback whales that were moving in the vicinity of the ship. A cow and a very young calf of the Northern population amused us for a long time just at breakfast time. The marine life was plentiful. At eight o’clock we had already seen the yellow bellied sea snake, Pantropical spotted dolphins, the whales and two rays.

As we got closer to San Josecito, the clouds were coming in and a promise of rain seemed like it would last all day. Those clouds however maintained the perfect weather to see toucans, tanagers and the scarlet macaws. The rain before noon came as a refreshing shower that cleared the skies.

After lunch we repositioned again to Corcovado National Park. Many birds were seen on the different walks and the Central American spider monkeys were seen from all trails. Spectacular moving frugivore monkeys swung from the treetops. The impressive forest was their stage to perform.

As we came back to the open area of the beach and we looked up, we found five king vultures in a kettle as if they were the icing on a cake of this fabulous day at the Osa Peninsula.
