Española Island
It’s time to learn a little more about this beautiful paradise called Galápagos, and it is great to do so by visiting one of the best islands, Española. Our landing site in the morning was Punta Suarez, located in the westernmost side of the island, where almost all the fauna met us to give an astonishing and spectacular show, in a place with one of the highest degrees of endemism in the world.
Since the very first moment we set foot on the concrete jetty, we saw the welcome committee: sea lions, marine iguana, lava lizards, crabs, Hood mockingbirds, two Galápagos hawks, blue-footed boobies, and more. As soon as we started to walk we realized that everywhere we looked there was an animal. It is hard to believe how a creature that looked completely different thousands of years ago, can still exist here, with different mechanisms of adaptation that make it able to survive; and we were witnesses of that. We cannot forget to mention the waved albatrosses (which are fascinating creatures, graceful and unique), the endemic Nazca boobies, the Darwin’s finches and the blow hole.
In the afternoon we did different water activities, such as: deep water snorkel, Glass bottom boat, kayaks, snorkel for beginners at the beautiful coralline white sandy beach, where our guests were surrounded by playful marine mammals, the Galápagos sea lion, and also by “spy-like” birds, looking into almost all bags from our guests, the mocking birds. From the glass bottom boat we spotted several species of colorful tropical fish, also different kinds of sea stars.
This pleasant day is vanishing in time, and will never come back; but it will stay in our hearts forever.
