Bartolome & Santiago Islands
A before-breakfast walk on our last day of the trip was well-deserved. The early walk up to the summit of Bartolome using the 372 steps to the top was just the beginning of a beautiful day.
With blue skies overhead, our 9:30am snorkel at the golden beach made possible spectacular views of the white-tipped reef sharks that were swimming around the base of pinnacle rock. A couple blue-footed boobies started diving three feet in front of the snorkelers! Incredible!
In the afternoon, Santiago welcomed us with the beach master, the sea lion that at the beginning of the snorkel thought it had changed our minds about getting in the water. The snorkelling was great, and some of us got to see at least three more reef sharks.
So, we said… the last day on the islands is “Shark Day”!
Puerto Egas on Santiago is Lindblad’s adopted island. The walk was a spectacular way of saying goodbye to the enchanted islands. We saw sea lions and fur seals, and marine iguanas enjoying the sunset on the lava fields, just like nothing new had really happened. For us, as visitors of this magical place, nature would never be the same, the Galápagos will always stay with us; this very unique place will never leave us!
