Floreana Island

We traveled in time and went back to the late 1700’s, the whaling times. In 1792, Captain James Colnett came to Floreana to study the possibilities of establishing a whaling harbor on the island. The Post Office Barrel was probably his idea, or maybe the idea of an unknown sailor. In any case, by the following year, we had for the first time in history the Post Office Bay on the maps. This system is the oldest throughout the Pacific Ocean and today we kept the long tradition alive by taking back to our countries every post card that we could hand deliver.

After breakfast we went to Champion Islet looking for the elusive Floreana mockingbird. The weather was so nice that we were ready for jumping in the water. So we did! During what was some of the best snorkeling on this trip, sea lions came to bubble in front of our faces, schools of fish were surrounding us, and the water temperature was into the 80s.

The afternoon was a great time to relax. Our guests had the chance to kayak, swim, snorkel or just walk along the green beach of Punta Cormorant. After an hour we started our walk to see the little population of Flamingos living in this area. There were hundreds of turtle’s nests on the white beach at the end of the trail.

What a day! We can’t wait for tomorrow.
