Thomas Bay & Petersburg
Today we woke up anchored in Thomas Bay on the southern end of Fredrick Sound. We started a beautiful day with clear skies and a temperature of 52 degrees. After a delicious breakfast some explored the bay in Zodiacs as others ventured on a crisp hike up to Cascade Falls.
We had a presentation on humpback whales from Andy Szabo; a whale researcher from the Alaska Whale Foundation. We then ate a healthy lunch as we positioned towards the town of Petersburg. Petersburg is a small fishing village of about 3500 people nicknamed “Little Norway”. This town is the commercial fishing center for Southeast Alaska.
In Petersburg we hiked on Kupreanof Island to Petersburg Creek and explored a muskeg bog while others had an aerobic hike with our wellness staff. Some biked and shopped in the village. We left the dock at 6:30 p.m. and headed north in Fredrick Sound towards Chatham Strait.
Our dinner tonight was Alaskan king crab legs complimented with ribs in a savory sauce. The humpback whales ended our day in a beautiful sunset amphitheater.
