Endicott Arm & Holkham Bay, Southeast Alaska

The early morning sun slowly rose into the sky, exposing the National Geographic Sea Bird to the bright rays of sunshine to start the day. Right away, we were surprised by the spotting of mountain goats far up in the forests, coming into Endicott Arm. The day was already proving to be wonderful!

We were given the unique opportunity to see Dawes Glacier up close and personal when we took a Zodiac cruise to experience the glacier ourselves! The harbor seals on the ice flows paid no attention to us as they continued their daily rituals. The magnificent cuts, crevices, shapes and colors of the glacier mystified us! It was almost as if Mother Nature was inviting us into her castle, excited to share the natural beauty of this special place.

After leaving Endicott Arm, we cruised to William’s Cove, where we anchored for an afternoon of hikes and kayaking. Although the sun was not out, the water was calm and glassy and the temperature held steady, providing a perfect opportunity to explore this tucked away cove.

Hiking through the sylvan forest, we were surprised to discover two sets of gray wolf tracks. Gray wolves’ paws are, on average, large than the palm of the human hand. Again, this was yet another glimpse into the wilderness untouched and unseen by many!

Back aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird, we discussed the day’s events and activities over a wonderfully prepared meal and were excited to think about the following day, to be spent in Petersburg!
