Los Islotes & Bahia Bonanza on Isla Espirtu Santo
Asleep on my pillow,
I dreamed that Sue said,
“Wake up! We have blue whales!
Come out sleepy heads!”
That is how our week in Baja California started and in six days of sailing, we managed to find a species of marine mammal before breakfast on five of those days.
The fin whales were next,
Told by a falcate dorsal fin,
A circular patch of water,
Told us where they had been.
For the week, our marine mammal list topped off at ten species including species such as false killer whales, pilot whales and sperm whales.
The whales with baleen,
Seemed in such easy reach,
Now’s the time for a challenge,
Something with big shiny teeth.
We have been amongst the greatest of whales and have experienced the best that Baja California has to offer. This time in the Gulf has made us realize what a treasure wildlife and wild places truly are.
Look down the Gray’s blowhole,
But please touch it not,
With a burst and a spray,
We’re soon covered in snot.
Some of our guests, both young in age and young at heart have contributed their writings and some of their drawings to share with you.
This trip has been magic,
Surrounded by whales galore,
We hardly can wait,
To come back for more!

Jumping in the sea
Barnacles are on their skin
They’re the greatest whale!

Oh sperm whale,
Oh sperm whale,
All hail the

Whales like clouds from
Heaven surround our vessel, fore and
Aft
Leaving no trace, but a fluid footprint
Evaporating into the sea depths except for the imprint upon my
Soul

Desert and Sea blend
Stark realities yet one
Birds blend them with grace
Tides and wind blend
Can this place be real or not?
Skies blend them with grace
Fish and birds blend
Dreaming of the Sea of Cortez
Colors blend them with grace
Desert and sea stay
Dream or real they will remain
Heart blends them with grace.
