Gorda Banks & Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico

After a smooth night of sailing we spent all morning searching for large marine mammals… whales! Of course, in the process we saw and enjoyed a good number of sea birds, among which were to be seen different gull species, pelicans, cormorants, terns and the magnificent frigate bird. Jumping into the air we enjoyed dozens of mobulas or Thurston’s devil rays. Dolphins would come to us every so often and ride our bow wave and bow ride us. These were mostly bottlenose dolphins. The big groups were common dolphins, which everybody enjoyed, as they tend to jump into the air more often and even ride our side-waves!

Eventually we entered the small bay of Cabo San Lucas, already with four giant behemoth ships! As soon as we were docked, we left the sip and boarded a series of buses that took some of us to a swimming point on the coast called Chileno’s Beach, where we snorkeled a while in the “refreshing” waters.

The other group was bussed to the small, older town of San Jose del Cabo, This group was comprised of birdwatchers, who visited the “Estero” or estuary, where water runs slowly all day. Vegetation is tall, and the diversity was great. For many guests, the list of first- time birds was big.

We all returned to Cabo San Lucas, where we immediately sailed out of the bay, and visited the “Friar’s Rocks”, and then turned around “Finisterra” (Land’s End) to the open Pacific, where we waited but a short time for the green flash, which satisfied many guests.
