Rincon River & Casa Orquidea, Golfo Dulce, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

We spent the last day of our Costa Rican adventure in Golfo Dulce. The tide pushed us to an early start. After a healthy breakfast, we got ready to enjoy the wonders of this very unique ecosystem, the mangrove forest. Some went ashore to take a birdwatching walk along the rural road of Río Rincón. The walkers took real advantage of the early bird activity. Another group took a Zodiac ride on the Rincon River. Snowy egrets, roseate spoonbills, green herons, toucans, aracaris, trogons, macaws and cotingas were seen on the different outings. The adventurous decided to explore the mangroves a little closer kayaking up the river to the crossroads of the Osa Peninsula and back.

After having lunch and crossing the gulf on the way to Golfito, we saw the pristine rainforest around the calm waters of the Golfo Dulce. As we were arriving to Casa Orquidea, a pod of spotted dolphins came to join us and do graceful jumping on the port side.

Located in the north of Golfo Dulce, Casa Orquidea is a little corner full of peace, good vibrations, a lot of birds, and an incredible amount of plants such as palm trees, orchids, bromeliads, pineapple, and much more. Casa Orquidea is a treat, a botanical garden owned and run by Ron and Trudy MacCallister, an ex-patriot couple that found this place about 30 years ago and decided to change their lives and move to a tropical environment, leaving the stress behind. A garden they started as a hobby turned into an attraction, and now they share their treasure with us.

To finish a beautiful day nothing can be better than an incredible sunset on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

Pura Vida.
