Los Islotes & Espiritu Santo

Today we visited Los Islotes, a small set of islands north of Isla Partida. Here we got to spend some time with California sea lions, both above and below the water’s surface. Starting the day with Zodiac cruises, we got a close look at the sea lion colony, and had some interesting bird sightings. Blue footed boobies, magnificent frigate birds and even a species which is very rarely seen in the Gulf, the masked booby.

Divers were divided into three groups that dove from the “Don José,” the ship supporting our divers. The rest of the group had the chance to go snorkeling. Sea lions were playful and the water visibility was good. The highlight is obviously the sea lions, but the fish life in Los Islotes is really amazing too.

As we left Los Islotes heading south to Isla Partida, four fin whales were seen. The sea conditions were not optimal, but still, it was possible to maneuver and get great looks at the magnificent giants of the ocean. A mother and calf pair of fin whales gave a close pass to the ship. At the same time, the band “Los Románticos” played all kinds of Mexican music for dancing. Some did a special kind of whale watching, beverage in hand, dancing to the rhythm of “Macarena” and pointing out the whales that could be seen in different directions.
