Floreana Island
A pre-breakfast early morning outing took us to the historical Post Office Bay where a wine barrel has been sitting waiting for eager sailors to come and pick up mail to their beloved ones.
This system really worked well for the early sailors and still, nowadays, we use this very old and romantic system with guests that visit this area. It works, too! You leave your letters here with the address, and somebody else takes them and hand delivers them to the destination. Like this, we all make new and special friends all over the world.
The mail barrel was only one little part of our exciting and full morning. After breakfast we went snorkeling and zodiac riding around a precious little round islet called Champion where the highlights were all around us. Playful baby sea lions were definitely everybody’s favorites.
At two o’clock in the afternoon we went kayaking along the shores off Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island.
At four, we all went on a nice, easy hike along the shores of an inland brackish water lagoon where the highlights were definitely the very tall and pink flamingoes. There were also lots of Franklin’s gulls and pintail ducks in the lagoon. The easy stroll took us from the green olivine beach to the white sandy flour beach where we saw quite a school of golden rays, and a hungry frigate bird who had a little baby turtle for an afternoon snack.
Our naturalists taught us also about the very first settlers on this island where now there is a tiny town with no more than one hundred and twenty people.
The vegetation for the plant lovers was lush and interesting and we learned a lot about the endemic ones. Portulaca, palo santo and palo verde were the favorite ones, big highlights today at Floreana Island!
