Kithnos, Cycladic Islands, Greece

Today was about as idyllic day as one can get on an island in Greece. This morning we anchored at a barely inhabited cove on the island of Kithnos. At this cove there was a tiny islet connected to the main island by a sand spit. So, with the sand spit making the perfect beach, we actually could swim in two different harbors from the same location. Everyone enjoyed having some time to reflect on their week and do whatever suited them best. Kayaking, swimming and soaking up the sun were high on most lists, as was a stroll to the small chapel at the top of the adjacent hill

The more adventurous among us went for a hike up a small rocky ravine. We followed in the footsteps of some of the local inhabitants – goats! They left us a bit of a trail, but we decided that they are better at crawling under shrubs and perhaps a little more sure-footed than us. Not to be showed up by a few goats, we continued on and were rewarded with beautiful scenery, interesting rock formations and a look at some of the local vegetation.

In the afternoon we completed the circle of our trip in the same way it had started, with a swim at Cape Sounion below the Temple of Poseidon. It was only right to dive into the Aegean Sea one last time to thank Poseidon (and to float around on a “noodle” once more). After all, he is the god of the sea, and provided us with beautiful calm conditions for this week in the Cyclades Islands.

Elli and Lora also added a final touch to our knowledge of Greece this afternoon with a wonderful question and answer session that focused on modern Greece. Our heads are full of 5000 years of history as well as images of the present as we head to a farewell cocktail hour.
