Española Island

Today we had a lot of fun on Española Island! This morning’s visit was excellent. We explored a beautiful place called Punta Suarez with our guests. We saw blue footed-boobies and young albatross trying to learn to fly and getting ready for the migration to the coast of Chile. It was hilarious to watch a young albatross that was trying to decide whether or not to jump from the cliff. It must be very scary to jump for the first time, and this is the only way they can learn to fly. To jump or not to was the day’s important decision, but in the end the young albatross decided that it was still too heavy to go. Instead it went back behind the bushes to do more exercise, loose some weight and maybe try again in the next few days. We returned to the ship walking down a rocky trail that goes through a big colony of marine iguanas. They seemed to be watching us and perhaps were thinking about how well we have evolved, and how we are able to carry so many cameras while balancing and climbing across the rocks.

In the afternoon we explored the north side of the island. We visited a lovely bay called Gardner Bay. We disembarked on a white beach with fine sand, almost the consistency of flour. All our guests enjoyed the afternoon at the beach and as one of the kids who is on board Polaris this week noticed, “what was most fun of all was that the young sea lions were mainly chasing and playing with the kids!” It was really something to watch. It was a privilege to be accepted by these wild animals and we all enjoyed playing and swimming with these fantastic creatures. I have to repeat myself: “We had a lot of fun in Española Island!”
