Fernandina Island
Happy New Year from the Galapagos Islands aboard the Polaris! It is the first day of 2002 and last night we received the New Year with a big party and champagne. We explained the many interesting local traditions that are followed in Ecuador and finished the night with dancing! This morning we circumnavigated Roca Redonda, and when we were crossing the equator line King Neptune came aboard the Polaris with a group of bloody, loud pirates. They baptized those intruders who were crossing the line for the first time, and without his permission. The baptism by water (sprayed from our fire hose) and “iguana blood” cocktails was a lot of fun.
During the late morning Zodiac ride along the shore line of Punta Vicente Roca, a curious juvenile brown pelican landed on the head of one of our guests and then moved over to perch on Naturalist Franklin’s arm. An afternoon walk and Zodiac ride at Punta Espinosa, Fernandina that ended with a spectacular common dolphin show against an orange sunset, made this an unforgettable day. Great start to what we hope will be a great year!
