Genovesa Island

The most wonderful combination of nice weather, spectacular landscapes and unique fauna made this day a marvelous one. Genovesa is one of my favorite islands. It is estimated that Genovesa, on just 5.4 square miles, is home to about one million birds! Not only can we see many different species of birds, but we can also watch them performing!

This season, frigate birds with inflated red gular sacks are everywhere on the island. The stunning males are trying to attract the attention of passing females. Many frigate males already successfully mated, therefore many females carry fertilized eggs.

Today something really amazing occurred. As one of our guests videotaped a beautiful female frigate, he noticed that she was acting strangely. Seconds later he was able to capture on film an extraordinary event: the female laid an egg in front of his eyes! Last year I was lucky enough to witness a red-footed booby doing the same. I have been talking about this fascinating sighting ever since. I have shared so many incredible moments as a Naturalist in this wonderful archipelago, that I have the feeling the simple fact of being here in Galapagos shows us that we are always in the right place, and at the right time.
