Santa Cruz Island

There is a song in the Galapagos that we often hear when the folkloric musicians from Puerto Ayora come on board the Polaris. The song says: “if you drink the sweet water of Pelican Bay, it will make you come back.”

Many of the naturalists in the Galapagos Islands have drunk this water. That might be one of the reasons why so many of us are hooked on this special place in the wide world. Several of us had originally planned to stay for just a year or two. Once we drank the water of Pelican Bay, the few years we had planned to stay became decades, or even “forever.”

Many of our guests feel the same way. Some of them have returned several times to the Polaris. It is the magical water, together with the fearlessness of the animals and the beauty of the pristine landscapes, that enchants and captures us. In addition, when people learn about the successfulness of our Galapagos conservation programs, they feel even more attracted to this archipelago. Galapagos is the living proof that human beings are beginning to take good care of our planet.

Tortoises crowd the highland fields this time of year. They are repopulating an island where, thanks to the National Park, the Charles Darwin Station and the visitors to the Galapagos Islands, the problems are becoming fewer every day.
