Espanola Island

There are beasts of land, sea and skies
That steal our gazes, our exploring eyes,
The sea lions with pups littering our path
Bulls like blockades admitting their wrath

Albatrosses few and far between
But like turkeys at Christmas their five chicks are seen
Helpless and hapless, in want of food
Soon they’ll be grown and in search of Peru

Can it be true? Is it a wonder?
A silhouette hovers like a dark cloud of thunder
Again now we see it, then two on a bush
These raptors are hunting and won’t stop ‘til they kill

The babies of boobies,
the tails of the tropics
Loose limbs of the lizards,
the iguanas swim by

Almighty waves crash by and by,
Surfers, sinkers and snorkelers try
To conquer the shores and its deeper parts too
Sharks, rays, turtles, king angelfish glow

The evening draws on. We admire our friends,
The sealions plays, discover and explore
A whole new world is waiting for them
Many years too, such is life on the beach
