Santa Cruz Island

The majestic Galapagos giant tortoises that inhabit this remote archipelago are not only providing the namesake to the islands. These giant reptiles are also the most emblematic of inhabitants. Nothing can be more exciting than an incredible eye-to-eye encounter with these giant reptiles. Today we all had an intimate close encounter of “the first kind.”

In the morning we visited the world famous Charles Darwin Research Station. In this place we learned and admired at the same time of the titanic efforts of many individuals and institutions to save and restore the populations of giant tortoises. In the afternoon we went to see these gigantic reptiles in the wild! Eternal minutes of silence and observation provided us unforgettable and magical moments. Scientists, wardens, environmentalists, visitors, naturalists, and the most various people you can imagine have contributed through the years to help with this successful conservation program. The sad centuries of overexploitation decimated their numbers by the thousands. The golden years we are living nowadays are filled with hope and love for these unique and wonderful critters.
