Isabela & Fernandina Islands

Today is the last day of the year 2002. According to tradition, most of us make a list at the end of every year that concerns the things that we want to accomplish in the coming year. By now there should be many things that we will have already done on our 2002 list. However, some of these things will have to be written again in next year’s “to do list”. I know this because this happens every year in my case!

But for all of you who wrote “take a trip to the Galapagos” on your list and are experiencing these magical islands right now, you should be proud of yourselves. Galapagos is such a beautiful place that it is a real “must” on the list of all of those who believe themselves to be adventurous people.

Today’s visit to the western-most islands in Galapagos was not only special because it is the last day of the year. It was special because the magic of the island of Fernandina was noticeable in every step we took and invaded our very soul.

Today we saw things that even those of us who have spent years in these islands have never seen before. During our snorkel outing we came upon a group of marine turtles that were enjoying the final day of the year in their own exciting way. As this is the peak of their mating season, we were not surprised to see a number of mating turtles. But if you look closely at today’s picture and count the number of individuals involved… that was ridiculous! As we have always said: expect the unexpected, you are in the Galapagos. Anything could happen! Happy New Year everyone!
