Santa Cruz Island

The New Year has begun. On Polaris it started as every year should start in Ecuador. We burned a puppet representing the bad things of the year that is ending, so we might begin a New Year, fresh and clean. We dressed in yellow (for good luck) and red (for good love) and had money in our pockets (for good fortune). Some of us ran around the ship’s decks with our suitcases, hoping to enjoy many more trips (with Lindblad Expeditions?) in 2003. We danced, both the crew and our guests, to salsa, merengue and rock and roll: music from all over the world. Everyone had fun and we made some great memories! Some of us celebrated with our family, some of us were away from the family, but in both cases the celebration was a success since we shared it with our new “Polarisfamily”.

Early in the morning of this first day of the New Year, we landed in the town of Puerto Ayora and continued with the festivities of 2003. What could be a better way to commemorate the Year than observing hatchling tortoises from our adopted island of Santiago? They are growing successfully in their rocky corrals at the Charles Darwin Research Station. It is going to be a very nice year for these tortoises, and also for us, and for all of you, I am sure. Once again, we wish you a Happy New Year from the Polaris, in the Galapagos Islands.
