Floreana Island

We continue on with our expedition aboard the M\S Polaris, next island: Floreana, full of mysteries. On our second full day in the Galapagos, we share an island rich in human history, ecology and geology.

Sea temperatures of 78 degrees, clear skies and calm waters. There is activity among sea lions, fish and even birds, and the breeze is warm. Before breakfast today we disembarked in Post Office Bay, a place that inspired the writing of good novels and mystery books, where pirates, buccaneers and first settlers encountered an array of different destinies. We are now linked with these past adventurers through the sharing of an interesting tradition, an ancient mail delivery system.

Once back on board, we proceeded to sail to another interesting location, Champion Islet, where we all started our water activities. Some of us went snorkeling, swimming and even to our glass bottom boat, to experience close encounters with a local sea-life we will never forget. Back aboard once again, this time to enjoy the Ecuadorian lunch that was beautifully displayed, not to mention offering a unique array of South American gastronomical tastes. After this we partook of another important Ecuadorian tradition, the siesta. While M\S Polaris moved on once more to our next location, some of us enjoyed a very interesting talk about a great naturalist, Charles Darwin, whose name will ever more be linked to biology, finches, natural selection, evolution, the Galapagos Islands and of course Floreana.

This is Floreana, where our picture was taken, an island capable of transporting you through time as this same landscape was admired by Darwin himself, the father of natural selection. Here, in his footsteps, our guests eagerly landed on a beautiful olivine beach. This afternoon we had an incredible walk watching the graceful pink Galapagos flamingos, and considered ourselves very lucky to see the young flamingos, since reproduction in this species is not stable but rather opportunistic.

It has been another amazing day in the Enchanted Islands, the sun is setting and our night promises bright stars, nice warm gentle cozy breeze and silence in all its splendour: we are in the Galapagos.
