Española Island

It was the perfect morning on Española where everything was the way it should be. There were many albatrosses and some of them were pretty close-by the trail. Blue-footed boobies decorated the path and were putting on courtship displays, sky-pointing, dancing.

We have a photographic expedition on Polaris this week in addition to our customary natural history voyage. These trips bring together people with similar interests and very long lenses. In order to make the most of the comfortable temperatures during the early part of the day, we were out this morning at the crack of dawn. It enabled us to sit and observe in strategic places and to compose pictures with our cameras. After a long time studying the options available, we would select the best picture for the frame in order to bring out the beauty of the raw nature we were observing. Such is the life of the photographer! As with the artist and the easel, this method enables an appreciation and close harmony with our surroundings, and an ability to really see, observe and concentrate with our eyes and minds and slowly recognize the beauty that beholds them.

Today’s photo is a close up of the head and back of a resting blue footed booby. With the early morning light and time to compose the perfect shot, I was able to concentrate on the delicate colors and intriguing feather patterns. Because the birds and animals here show no fear of us, Galapagos is an ideal place for photography!
