Santa Cruz Island

Our day began with a nice view of Academy Bay, a place where many tour boats congregate everyday to take advantage of the activities this populated island has to offer. We started our morning well with a visit to the Charles Darwin Center where we saw baby tortoises. We also saw mockingbirds on the giant cacti and many of the well known Darwin’s Finches. A few meters further we got to see the corral of lovely lonesome George and the two females walking around the feeding platform while George chased them.

We were also able to spend a bit of time in the nice town of Puerto Ayora, which holds the majority of the Galápagos population. We walked through the main street of town; some of us shopped for exotic souvenirs while others observed the local people in their habitat. This town is usually very busy because of its many visitors. It is the largest city in the province, so it was a great way to get to see the economic and touristy center of the archipelago. Later on, we took buses to ride all the way to the highlands where we had lunch at a beautiful farm with many colorful plants that added a lot to our guests’ experience. Besides that, most of us were able to play the long awaited volleyball game!

After a nice lunch, we prepared once again the cameras and rode the buses to see the land tortoises in the wild. They are absolutely amazing, and the landscape is very unique.
