Floreana & Isabela Islands
Every day I wake up I have great expectations. It is a real privilege to be here interpreting nature in one of the most famous protected natural areas in the entire world: the Galápagos National Park. Every single day brings out to our lives enrichment, excitement and joy. Today, it was not the exception. In the morning our water activities were highly successful. The Galápagos underwater world is extraordinary. Crystal clear and warm waters provided us an almost perfect ambiance that enhanced tremendously our experience. Colorful invertebrates and large schools of tropical fish made us dream we were immersed in a gigantic aquarium. Galápagos sea lions were amazing as well. It is great to have the unusual thrill to be face to face with them. Some of us had the thrill to encounter some of them in a cave, it was magical.
After lunch we navigated toward Isabela Island for our next stop: Puerto Villamil. In this painteresque small fishing town you can still feel a very pleasant atmosphere. The town is still relatively isolated from the rest of the islands. A beautiful waterfront framed by a very large white beach is the first sighting that impresses its visitors. There is a little lagoon in town were we have a great view of Greater flamingos. These colorful birds are considered very rare on the islands. They are a Galápagos endemic subspecies or race, therefore they are in the way of evolving, adapting to the Galápagos environment. It is estimated than their entire population on the archipelago consists in just about six hundred individuals. One of the main attractions in town is the Giant tortoises’ breeding center. In this place we witnessed the titanic efforts that are being made to save the Isabela Islands’ giant tortoises subspecies. A paradisiacal walk along the beach or trough the heart of this relaxed little town was a golden finale for another day in paradise. We can hardly wait for what our expedition will bring to our lives in the next days.
