After our four rounds of whale watching yesterday, we were eager to get an early start again this morning. Conditions being windy with major swells didn’t stop our luck of finding a mother and calf, and many other spy hopping gray whales.

We returned to the ship in the late morning so we could start heading south down Hull canal. The conditions were beautiful as we stood on the bow looking for wildlife. We spotted many birds, some coyotes and then came a number of playful bottlenose dolphins who loved to show off and ride the bow of our ship. Other guests enjoyed a nice late morning stretch in the sunlight, watching the passing mangroves.

After lunch we anchored at Shear Shaft Cove, a great place to lower our Zodiacs and take tours through the mangroves channels. This was a bird lover’s heaven, as we sat with the calm water below us, the blue sky above us, the lush green mangroves all around, listening to the calls and sounds of a variety of sea birds. We got very close to a yellow crowned night heron, and we watched as it made its way out into the sunlight towards the waters edge in search for food.

This was a day filled with watching, listening, smelling, and learning about the wildlife in Baja California. With our snorkel briefing out of the way, we are eager for another morning to come so we can put our wetsuits to use off the shores of Cabo San Lucas.
