Santa Cruz Island

The island of Santa Cruz is one of the most important places in the Galápagos Archipelago. Long ago, people from all over the world decided to call the Galápagos their home, and one of the chosen areas, which is now known as Puerto Ayora, is the most active town within the Galapagos.

Puerto Ayora is also home to the main offices of the National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station. As a result of conservation programs that both institutions had created, the flora and fauna, a paradise in the archipelago, has remained practically untouched.

The ongoing giant tortoises program has been one of the most successful initiatives developed in the last couple of decades, and it is responsible for the restoration of damaged populations due to the presence of man. Whalers and buccaneers, back in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds, deminished the majority of the tortoise population.

Luckily, the organizations of the Galápagos are a role model for conservation of endangered creatures, and their well thought planning has given the results that we were all looking for.
