Floreana Island

It’s our third day exploring the Galápagos Islands and everyone on board have no words to describe the good time we are having, we had a great day visiting the Island of Floreana located in the southern part of the archipelago.

Early in the morning some of our guests went on a short walk in order to visit a very old post office barrel that has been serving as the only mailing system of the island for many centuries, during the visit we really got to know more about the other side of the Galápagos Islands, the human history. Shortly afterwards we set sail to an Islet called Champion; once we dropped anchor our guests were offered many activities. Some of us went deep water snorkeling, the highlight during this activity without any doubt were the sea lions; they were so inquisitive and playful with us while we were watching big schools of tropical fish, they were trying to catch our attention the whole time.

Some people did not want to get wet so we took them to a glass bottom boat tour; they could experience the marine ecosystem of Champion without getting wet. We also had the chance to do a coastal exploration aboard the Zodiacs around Champion Islet, where we successfully accomplished our objective, which was to find Charles mockingbirds.

In the afternoon after our well deserved lunch followed by an optional impressive talk by our expert from Dartmouth college, Kenneth Yalowitz; others just preferred to nap. We did some kayaking in a very nice place called Punta Cormorant, here you actually get the idea of how these Islands were formed, you can count a lot of volcanic cones and see the different types of volcanic materials that we have.

Later in the Afternoon we enjoyed the green beach of Punta Cormorant and we went on a hike to see a brackish water lagoon that was full of flamingos feeding; on the other side of Punta Cormorant we visited also a white sandy beach, in our walk along the shore we encountered many sea turtles, white tips reef sharks and golden rays.

We went back on board with a lot of stories to tell, with plenty of pictures and with good expectations for the coming days.
